Filing your taxes in Ontario comes with a few local perks. While some temporary pandemic-era credits have officially retired, the provincial government has introduced new ways to keep cash in your pocket. Here are the three heavy-hitters you should be watching for on your 2025-2026 return.

1. The Ontario Seniors’ Home Safety Tax Credit

If you are a senior (65+) or live with a senior relative, this is a massive win for home accessibility. This credit is designed to help you age in place safely by covering the cost of renovations.

  • How much can you claim? This is a refundable credit worth 25% of your costs. You can claim up to $10,000 in expenses, which means a maximum refund of $2,500.

  • What counts as an eligible expense?

    • Grab bars and reinforcements for showers or toilets.

    • Wheelchair ramps, stair lifts, and elevators.

    • Walk-in bathtubs or wheel-in showers.

    • Non-slip flooring and additional light fixtures.

    • Automatic garage door openers.

  • Trip Requirements: The renovations must be made to your principal residence (where you actually live). If you're fixing up a secondary home, you must intend to move in within 24 months.

2. The Canada-Ontario Training Support (CTC)

The old Ontario Job Training Credit has been rolled into the broader Canada Training Credit (CTC). If you’re between 26 and 65 and heading back to school to sharpen your skills, this is for you.

  • How much can you claim? This credit offers individuals 50% of their eligible tuition and fees, for a refundable amount of up to $2,000.

  • Who is eligible?

    • You were an Ontario resident on December 31, 2025.

    • You have a "Canada training limit" above zero (check your latest Notice of Assessment).

    • Fees were paid to an eligible institution, such as a university, college, or certified occupational skill center.

  • How to apply: You’ll need your previous Notice of Assessment (NOA) to confirm your training limit. You can find this easily in your CRA My Account

3. The Ontario Seniors Care at Home Tax Credit

New for the 70+ crowd, this refundable credit helps low-to-moderate-income seniors with the high cost of medical expenses.

  • How much can you claim? You can claim 25% of your eligible medical expenses up to a maximum of $6,000 in costs. This puts up to $1,500 back in your pocket.

  • Who is eligible?

    • You (or your spouse) were 70 years of age or older by December 31, 2025.

    • Your family net income is less than $65,000.

  • Eligible Expenses: This includes a wide range of costs like nursing care, therapeutic services, and even certain medical equipment required for home recovery.

Pro Tip:

For all these credits, even if you owe $0 in taxes, you should still apply. Because they are "refundable," the government will actually send you a check for the credit amount rather than just reducing your tax bill to zero.
